Description:Methods for the sampling and analysis of arsenic (7440382) (As), nickel (7440020) (Ni), tungsten (7440337) (W), vanadium (7440622) (V), talc (14807966), and wood dust in the workplace were developed. As, Ni, W and samples were collected on a cellulose ester filter and analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GFAAS) or flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Talc samples were collected on a polyvinyl-chloride filter and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Wood dust samples were collected on glass fiber filters and were analyzed gravimetrically. The analytical method percent recovery of As was determined to be about 100.5 at 615 micrograms per cubic meter and in all cases collection efficiency was better than 0.939 percent. The analytical method recovery of Ni was determined to be 101.9 percent at 0.5 times the NIOSH recommended standard. The recovery was determined to be 0.963 at 1.2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) soluble W and 0.995 at 9.0mg/m3 insoluble W. The RSD for soluble W was 0.963 percent at 1.2mg/m3 and 0.995 percent at 9.0mg/m3 for insoluble W. The analytical method recovery was about 0.971 at 1.1 times the NIOSH recommended standard for soluble V and about 0.982 at 1.0 times the standard for insoluble V. The detection limit for filters containing 3.0, 19.5, and 39.0 micrograms of talc analyzed at the 10 micrograms per filter for the 006 peak. The analytical method recovery was about 1.000 at 1.0 times the NIOSH recommended standard for wood dust with collection efficiency better than 97.5 percent in all cases. The authors conclude that the methods for Ni, W, soluble V, and wood dust were fully validated and that validation for As, insoluble W, and talc are still pending further investigation.
