Testing of prototype knee protective devices.

  An experimental prototype for a new knee pad was developed to reduce prepatellar bursitis in coal miners. The pad was designed based on information obtained from literature reviews and interviews with a number of coal miners, orthopedic personnel, and mine inspectors. The pad consisted of a tough rubberlike material with deep V-shaped threads at the bottom, a polyurethane cylindrical cushion bent into a horseshoe shape, and a perforated rubber strap. The knee pads were tested under mining conditions by 8 to 10 mining inspectors. The pads were rated high in comfort. The main complaint was the tendency of the pads to roll or twist on the knee. The prototype was modified three times based on the mine inspectors' tests. The prototype was compared with eight other commercially available knee pads by nine mine inspectors. The experimental knee pad was judged next to the best in overall comparisons. The authors recommend that coal miners and inspectors be issued knee pads of their choice to prevent discomfort and temporary disability caused by ill fitting pads.
