Description:Mechanical power press safety is reviewed. Existing regulations and known safeguards are discussed, with emphasis on the systems approach towards safety. Technical, behavioral, and ergonomic factors are discussed along with design criteria for safeguarding systems. Performance versus specification standards are analyzed. The author concludes that the mechanical power press can be made very safe if safety features are designed into the machines rather than as auxiliary parts. Recommendations include a review of hand reach speed, dependability of safety features, ergonomics, and safeguard tripping.
