Industrial hygiene report of mechanical cotton picker operator exposure to DEF at Valley Picking Company, 1726 Oaks Street, Tulare, California.

  Mechanical cotton picker operator exposure to s,s,s-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (78488) (DEF) was characterized by an industrial hygiene survey of the mechanical cotton picking operations conducted by the Valley Picking Company on the McClure Farm (SIC-0722) in Tulare, California, on November 14 to 17, 1978. Twenty three respiratory samples were collected using a 37 millimeter glass fiber filter and an impinger pump. Eight dermal samples were collected on 4 inch square gauze pads attached to the clothing of the operators. All samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. Sampling was performed after a period of heavy rains. At testing time, the weather was overcast and humid. Respiratory samples contained 17.0 to 257.0 nanograms per cubic meter DEF and the dermal samples contained 0.02 to 0.09 milligrams DEF for an 8 hour period. The author notes that no standards have been established for occupational exposure to DEF. Further sampling is recommended during more typical weather conditions conducive to higher exposure concentrations.
