Description:A method was described for the determination of diethylcarbamoyl chloride (88108) (DECC) in air samples. Five liter air samples were drawn through a sorbent tube containing Porapak P to trap the DECC. The DECC was desorbed with ethyl acetate and aliquots of the solution were analyzed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. In samples where DECC was trapped with an amine co- contaminant, diethylamine and aniline had no effect on sampling stability, while benzylamine caused a decrease in DECC recovery that was dependent on temperature and the amount of amine. The method was validated for the range of 8 to 240 milligrams DECC per cubic meter. DECC was quantitatively recovered from humid air samples after storage for 28 days. Since the reactive nature and concentration of co-contaminants may be unknown, the author recommends the refrigeration of samples immediately after collection.
