Management stressors.

  The effects of management stress on the organization or enterprise in which the overstressed individual operates was investigated by identifying a potential stressor and describing a case illustrating its effects. In the data processing operations control department of a nationally known manufacturer and distributor, management problems resulting in low productivity, poor morale, strained interpersonal relationships and active job seeking by members of the department existed. Work was highly fragmented and absence of one department member required outside help to be brought in. The supervisor of the department was replaced and the clerks were given the opportunity to work as a consensus team, i.e., the total absence of a leader. Routine decisions were made by individuals, important decisions were made by consensus. Productivity increased and morale increased within the department. Team members learned several other jobs shortly after implementation, and the absence of one or two members no longer required outside help. Productivity objectives were met and went on to increased service to data processing users. After several months of operation one member left the group, the team decided not to replace. This process repeated itself three times, showing a significant increase in productivity of 36%.
