Description:An industrial hygiene survey to determine the type and extent of industrial exposures existing during torch brazing operations at the General Motors Assembly Division plant in Norwood, Ohio, is reported. The primary function of this facility is automobile assembly (SIC-3711). During torch brazing operations, various metal parts are joined by 2 brazers and 7 inert gas (MIG) welders at a rate of 57 automobile bodies/hour. A total of 15 area air samples were collected for trace metal fume analysis. Analyses were made for silver (7440224), copper (7440508), zinc (7440666), cadmium (7440439), iron (743986), chromium (7440473), manganese (7439965), magnesium (7439954), and zinc-oxide (1314132). Noise levels during operations were also determined. The fume analyses indicated all concentrations below current standards; however, the potential for peak exposures during periods of heavier work loads does exist. Noise levels in the torch brazing/welding area were in excess of 90dBA which is the current permissible standard. Only during lunch and break periods were the noise levels less than 90dBA.
