Description:The philosophy and development of indices for rating severity of the thermal environment are outlined as well as the methods of assessment of the several parameters involved in the indices; in addition, guidelines for application and interpretation of the indices are given. Fundamental physical laws governing thermal exchanges and information on the operating principles and procedures of instruments are given to guide in the selection and correct use of instrumentation. Included are thermometry, anemometry, psychrometry, and radiometry. The indices of thermal stress include effective temperature, heat stress index, predicted four hour sweat rate, wet bulb globe temperature index, and windchill index.
