Description:The uses and characteristics of direct reading instruments, calibration, and properties of aerosols, gases and vapors are described breifly. The operating principles of aerosol luminescence, chemiluminescence, combustion, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, coulometry, flame ionization, gas chromatography, photometry, polarography, and radiography are discussed in relation to quantitative estimation of atmospheric contaminants. Some characteristics of instruments are presented. Direct reading colorimetric devices, using liquid reagents, chemically treated papers and indicator tubes are described in detail, with a list of detecting reactions in indicator tubes.
