Description:An investigative field study of the Diamond Shamrock Chemical Company (SIC-2869), Redwood City, California, was conducted on February 16, 1972 following a request from the San Mateo County Health Department for an epidemiological evaluation of bis(chloromethyl)-ether exposures and lung cancer incidence among employees at this plant. Bis(chloromethyl)-ether (542881) is involved in the synthesis of a series of anionic exchange strong- base resins, and potential exposure occurs during production when a tank must be opened so that beads of polystyrene can be fed in. There is also a pilot plant that runs batches of resin and possibilities exist for exposure. An excessive lung cancer risk is suspected in this plant population. It is recommended that sputum cytology and chest x-rays be conducted on all individuals with any suspected history of exposure. Industrial hygiene measures to reduce exposure are recommended.
