  A critical review is presented of the practical aspects of applying a heat stress standard to an industrial installation, with emphasis on the possible violations that might be found by a compliance officer during a plant inspection. The NIOSH Criteria Document in this field was examined and found wanting as to the definition of hot work environment, warning signs, rigid limits of both work load and exposure to heat that do not take acclimatization into account, protective clothing, work practices, etc.
