• Description:
  Results are reported of a sampling survey to establish worker exposure to sulfur-dioxide, copper (7440508), arsenic and other trace metals in the smelting and casting operations of a copper company (SIC-3362). Various sulfur-dioxide sampling techniques were compared. Airborne levels of lead, zinc (7440666), cadmium (7440439) and arsenic (7440382) in the smelter building did not exceed the OSHA standards for any of these contaminants, but some of the copper dust samples taken above the reverberatory furnaces appear to be in excess of the dust standard. Brick masons were exposed to the highest concentrations of copper dusts. Samples taken at all processing stages showed very low sulfur-dioxide levels in the air.
