Description:Research report describing a first effort at defining hazards in a high risk occupation, roofing. It elaborates on roofer attributes, equipment, training and other factors which may contribute to the occurrence of accidents in such work. The results suggest a number of needs for improved safety including redesign of basic roofing implements and development of personal protective equipment especially designed to cope with the environmental and materials handling burdens in roofing routine. Also recommended is an upgrading of apprenticeship training. The roofing foreman is seen as the key person influencing the safety level of the work crew.
