Description:A series of standards are presented for industrial and firefighters head protective devices. The standards are: (a) a performance standard which lists the attributes and levels of performance for four classes of industrial head protective devices, (b) a testing standard, which describes test methods, procedures, and equipment for each attribute to be tested, and (c) a user standard which describes how industrial and firefighters head protective devices are to be properly selected, used and maintained. Topics include: needs for head protection, including head injury accident frequency, types, and severity; anthropometry of the head; human factors considerations, including helmet weight, size, comfort, fit, thermal characteristics, material skin reactions, aesthetic characteristics, and restriction of sensory processes; headgear requirements; methods of head protection; test requirements, including conditioning, impact, penetration, electrical insulation, flammability, and retention testing.
