Determination of magnitude of exposure to asbestos fibers associated with a woman's coat containing 8 percent asbestos.

  Series of tests are conducted on a navy blue woman's coat, 72 percent reprocessed wool, 20 percent nylon, and 8 percent asbestos including: wear tests with and without a simulated infant (a box with a membrane filter at site of child's noise), whisk broom tests, and dry cleaning of garment with companion clothing. Data are given for concentration of asbestos, range of fiber lengths and medium fiber length for sample of personal and baby breathing zone, brushing site, general room site, and dry cleaning fluid before and after washings. Appended are representative electron micrographs of asbestos fibers from general room samples collected before and after coat was dry cleaned. Analysis of findings of tests before and after dry cleaning of coat indicate that fibers are transfered from coat to ambient air in the wear and whisk broom tests and that fibers are transfered to companion garments and dry cleaning fluid during the dry cleaning tests.
