This report consisted of papers as presented at the NIOSH Symposium on Efforts to Prevent Injury and Disease among Agricultural Workers, held August 25 through 27, 1993 in Lexington, Kentucky. The purpose of the meeting was to highlight accomplishments by both the states and NIOSH in reaching the common goal of improving the health and safety of agricultural workers and their families. Specific topics covered at the conference included the role of Kentucky in agricultural health and safety activities, the role of NIOSH in agricultural health and safety activities, occupational injury surveillance, hazard surveillance training, injuries related to potato harvesting, real time video monitoring of noise, a protocol for evaluating safety and health hazards on family farms, health and safety communication, air sampling strategies to assess exposure response relationships for respiratory disease in dairy farmers, pulmonary toxic components in wheat dust, green tobacco sickness, cancer control in farmers, agricultural educational resources centers, computer based safety programs for students, a farm family health and hazard surveillance program, mandatory reporting of farm injuries, farming health project surveys, the farm and agricultural injury classification code, occupational health surveillance of US farm workers, intervention, pesticide use and hazards, mortality data, safety training, and development of analytical methods for agricultural chemicals.
