Description:Possible causes of persistent allergy reactions related to exposure to insecticides at NYASCO Products, Inc., (SIC-7218), Long Island City, New York, were investigated. The evaluation was requested by management and was conducted on August 19, 1981. An insecticide containing diazinon and allethrin had been applied to the basement of the site, which housed a clothing retail operation. Although no airborne insecticides were detected, formaldehyde concentrations of 1 to 1.5 parts per million were determined. The formaldehyde was used as a fabric treatment agent. NIOSH recommends that exposure to formaldehyde be handled as a potential carcinogen and that exposure be reduced to the lowest feasible limit. The authors suggests that the symptoms of one of the employees (dermagraphism) could be caused by exposure to formaldehyde. The author recommends that the facility's office be relocated inside an enclosure to avoid contact with the treated fabrics and provided with an outside source of air.
