Description:Results of environmental sampling at a chemical company revealed a significant hazard to the health and well being of the workers exposed to benzene (71432) and diethylstilbestrol (56531). The potential toxicity of benzene was assessed utilizing the existing federal standards as the best estimate of allowable exposure to protect against adverse effects. For diethylstilbestrol, in addition to a persistent history of characteristic reactions, high urine levels and adverse reactions were found in the workers examined, and there was widespread diethylstilbestrol contamination over the entire plant and auxiliary facilities. The 24 hours urinary creatinine (60275) levels provide a good guide for monitoring of diethylstilbestrol exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
