Description:Environmental survey and medical examination of workers in spraying, washing, testing, and soldering operations in a printed wiring board processing area, indicating exposure to excessive amounts of trichloroethylene (79016), with n-propyl acetate and toluene (108883) not being found at excessive concentrations. Excessive levels of trichloroacetic acid and trichloroethanol (115208) are found in the urine. Complaints include nausea, headache, dizziness, and mucous membrane irritations, with symptoms disappearing a few hours after leaving the environment. Recommendations are made for use of, and maintenance of, approved respirators and exhaust ventilation hoods, substitution of less toxic solvents for trichloroethylene as practicable, frequent ventilation quality measurements, and improvement in work procedures. Data are given for threshold limit values, toxic effects, physical properties, and chemical properties of the solvents. [Description provided by NIOSH]
