Description:Evaluation of hazards from exposures to fumes of cyanide (57125), hydrogen chloride (7647010), nitric acid (7697372), zinc oxide (1314132) and chromium (7440473) fumes in electroplating processes, with standard concentrations given for the substances. The maximum concentration value obtained, for nitrate, is found less than 50 percent of the established standard for nitric acid, and all other substances appear at concentrations of 1 percent or less of the federal standards. Based on employee interviews and environmental samples, the substances are not potentially toxic at concentrations found or used in the zinc (7440666) electroplating process, although occasional periods of air concentrations in the electroplating area might produce irritation. Recommendations include provision of overhead exhaust ventilation, avoidance of cross-draft ventilation over the electroplating tanks, and use of an appropriate respirator.
