Description:Evaluation of hazards from exposures to ammonia (7664417) and ozone (10028156) during operation of blueprint machines. Eight-hour time weighted average exposures for ammonia and ozone are 50 ppm and 0.1 ppm, respectively. Medical and environmental results indicate that both ammonia and ozone are non-toxic at the concentrations found in the work environment. Toxic effects of ammonia are tissue destruction from contact of aqueous solution with eye and skin; ocular damage, mild to severe dermatitis, and irritation of the respiratory tract and throat from ammonia gas. A concentration of 2000 ppm produces convulsive coughing which could be fatal within 30 minutes. Effects of ozone in various concentrations given include mucous membrane irritation, lung damage characterized by pulmonary congestion, edema and hemorrhage, lowering of blood pressure, chest cramps, frontal headaches, severe fatigue and death at relatively low concentrations. Recommendations include the use of gloves and safety goggles, and adherence to good ventilation practices. [Description provided by NIOSH]
