Description:Evaluation of hazards from carbon-monoxide and welding fumes at a metal products factory. Medical interviews conducted with employees in the area of arc welding, spot welding, and metal punch press operations, and environmental samples of carbon-monoxide (630080), carbon-dioxide (124389), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), and sulfur- dioxide (7446095) (Federal Standard 50 ppm, 5000 ppm, 5 ppm, and 5 ppm respectively) indicate the need for reducing potential health hazards. Toxic effects include irritation to eyes and mucous membranes, blood poisoning, and irritation to the respiratory tract. Recommendations include additional local ventilation, and restriction of tow motor operations to short stays near workstations. [Description provided by NIOSH]
