Description:Worker exposures to toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (584849) (TDI) were investigated on May 30 and 31, 1974 at Trionic Industries, Incorporated in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The evaluation was requested by an unspecified company agent on behalf of nine workers employed in the polyurethane (9009545) foam molding department. Personal and area air samples for TDI were collected at various points in the molding area; ventilation and air flow were assessed; and all nine workers were questioned about work related health symptoms. TDI exposures at the clamping station ranged from 0.016 parts per million (ppm) for a single operation cycle to 0.033ppm for two cycles in an 8 hour period. These exceeded the proposed 8 hour time weighted average standard of 0.005ppm. The velocity of the air exhausted at the clamping station was 75 feet per minute. A thermal draft was created by heated air escaping from the tunnel, and this air flowed back toward the operator. Of the five workers employed for at least 2 months, none reported any work related health problems. The authors conclude that hazardous exposures to TDI exist at the clamping station. They recommend modifications and improvements to the ventilation system, use of respirator and protective clothing, and provision of preplacement and periodic medical evaluations for workers.
