Description:Employees at the reactor station of a chemical company (SIC-2869) are found exposed to toxic concentrations of 1,3-dichloro-5,5- dimethylhydantoin (118525) (DCDMH), the levels exceeding both the ACGIH Threshold Limit and the OSHA standards. Cough and chest discomfort are found in a reactor operator. The major cause of the over exposure is found to be an accidental over reaction during the aeration process causing 100-150 pounds of DCDMH. Detailed information concerning environmental and medical results are presented. Recommendations include engineering controls, periodic education of all employees in the use of respiratory equipment, atmospheric sampling inside the plant, and maintenance of all local exhaust ventilation systems.
