Description:Potential hazards in the meat cutting and wrapping departments of three supermarkets (SIC-5423) were evaluated. Meat department employees were interviewed, examined, given preshift and post shift pulmonary function tests, and blood samples were obtained. Environmental sampling for substances emitted by the hot wire cutting of polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) meat wrapping film was conducted. No measurable concentrations of vinyl-chloride (75014) monomer were found in emissions from hot wire cutting of the film. Hot wire cutting of films and thermal activation of price labels release irritants substances into the environment, but breathing zone concentrations are found to be low compared to established standards.
