  Measurements were performed in the air of a shoe producing plant (SIC-3143, SIC-3144) in order to determine the degree of exposure of employees to organic vapors emanating from materials used in cementing, spraying, and staining (SIC-3149) of shoes. Methyl-ethyl- ketone (78933) concentrations measured in adhesive applicators' breathing zones were greater than the safe exposure levels. Individual concentrations measured in other employee breathing zones were not considered to be unsafe, although on the basis of the threshold values for mixtures there was considerable unwarranted exposure. Other solvents involved included hexane (110543), acetone (67641), ethyl-acetate (141786), isopropanol (67630), ethanol (64175), toluene (108883), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101), and butyl-acetate (123864). Medical questionnaires indicated that a number of workers experienced light headedness, eye irritation, nose and throat irritation, dry hands and even epistaxis. Recommendations are made for local exhaust system at specific work sites, as well as suitable hand protection by means of gloves. [Description provided by NIOSH]
