Description:Acting on a request by the employees of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. (SIC-3079), East Pittsburg, Pa., regarding the occurrence of skin and respiratory disorders among workers exposed to epoxy resins and other substances, an environmental-medical study was carried out to determine whether any substances normally found in the place of employment has potentially toxic effects in such concentrations as used or found. The results obtained show that a minimal but potential hazard exists due to contact with 2 epoxy resins systems. Patch testing showed that 37 percent of the workers tested had some type of reaction, including 11 percent who had a sensitization reaction. These findings were confirmed by a review of medical records of employees working in the same department. A potential health hazard is also considered to exist from exposure via vapor inhalation and direct contact with the JZ resin. There was no evidence of a health hazard resulting from exposure to 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556), lead (7439921), tin (7440315), naphtha and xylene (1330207). Recommendations are made to correct the prevailing conditions. [Description provided by NIOSH]
