Description:A combined environmental-medical health hazard evaluation was carried out in the Wire Harness area at Columbus Products Corporation (SIC-2821), as a result of complaints of dry throat and headaches received from workers employed in the polyvinyl-chloride (9002862) molding operation. According to the results obtained exposure of employees to chemical agents at molding operations are not believed to be toxic under the conditions recorded at the time of the survey. Worker exposures to benzene (71432), carbon- monoxide, hydrogen-chloride (7647010), and vinyl-chloride (75014) were determined by personal and area air sampling. Complaints of dry throat and headache did not appear to be related to activities and materials used in the area. The reported symptoms could be due to the presence of an unidentified agent, back drafting of contaminated outside air, or group hysteria. Recommendations are made for the reevaluation of the ventilation system. [Description provided by NIOSH]
