Description:

An environmental and medical survey conducted at the Cincinnati Enquirer (SIC-2711), a daily newspaper, revealed that exposure to solvents, cleansers, and fungal organisms do not present a toxic hazard to the majority of the workers under the observed conditions of use. There were, however, indications that skin dermatitis had previously been a problem in several cases prior to the use of impermeable gloves and in conjunction with excessive use of harsh skin cleaners. The fungal infections observed while not caused by a unique work environment are normally stimulated to heightened activity during times of high heat and humidity. The determination is based on environmental survey findings including measurement of breathing zone and area exposure to airborne concentrations of stoddard solvents and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556), observations of work practices, laboratory analysis of cleaning agents, and medical evaluation of clinical evidence of fungal and other skin diseases and cultures of wipe samples from shower rooms.
