Description:

Acting on a request from the safety coordinator, a health hazard evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on November 19 and December 10, 1976, in order to determine whether exposure to Dura Gard A1 degreaser of the employees at the Matryx company was posing a health hazard to the employees. Employee exposure to hydrogen- sulfide (7783064) and fluorides from the degreaser did not constitute a health hazard at the concentrations measured during the evaluation, and no hydrogen (1333740) gas was found in the area of the solvent. Based on this information, there is no evidence to suggest that an explosion hazard existed. Employees exposures to toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556) did not pose a health hazard. Although the parts cleaner may be exposed to excessive levels of the compound for short periods of time, observation of work practices revealed that employees were having skin contact with 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Recommendations are made for the wearing of rubber gloves for prolonged contact with the solvent.
