Description:

Acting on a request from the Warehouse Employees Local Union No. 730 regarding the exposure of workers to leaking ammonia refrigerant, a Health Hazard Evaluation survey was conducted by NIOSH at the frozen warehouse of the Safeway Stores Distribution Center (SIC-5411), Landover, Maryland, on August 4-5, 1976. Based on environmental measurements of airborne concentrations, confidential interviews with 20 affected workers, and observations of work practice and exposure controls it was determined that the exposure to ammonia (7664417) was not hazardous under the survey conditions. The comments of interviewed workers and management revealed a history of intermittent ammonia leaks and a few instances of minor ammonia discharges associated with system failures, resulting in respiratory and eye irritation. Recently initiated preventive maintenance has apparently eliminated frequent leaks. Recommendations are made for protection of personnel during larger system failures.
