Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH at Standard Forgings Corporation, a manufacturer of railroad freight car axles (SIC-3462), in East Chicago, Indiana, on August 17, 1976. An authorized employee representative requested the investigation for worker exposure to airborne mists of Tectyl-506, a rust preventive containing mineral spirits which was contaminating workroom air on the finish line. Personal observation, interviews of seven affected employees, environmental concentration measurements, and the composition and use of Tectyl-506 clearly indicate that the volatile mineral spirts used in Tectyl-506 are not toxic at concentrations measured in the finish line or palletizer areas. The palletizer may experience symptoms of upper respiratory irritation or nasal irritation due to occasional peak concentration periods, but other adverse health effects from this exposure are not expected. All environmental samples detected minimal vapor concentrations which were well below the established threshold limit value of 100ppm and it is unlikely that peak concentrations generated during spraying applications would exceed 60ppm. Recommendations for improved ventilation in the finish line enclosure are made in order to improve air quality and provide for greater worker comfort.
