  A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH at the Emery Industries in Cincinnati, Ohio. An authorized employee representative requested the investigation for worker exposure to azelaic-acid (123999) in the bagging operations (SIC-2869), because all eight affected workers at this operation were alleged to have experienced skin reddening and burns, and nose running. Inspection of the work areas and materials used, medical evaluation of the exposed workers measurement of worker exposures to airborne contaminants, and review of the current knowledge of the materials used indicated that exposure of employees to airborne particulate, azelaic-acid and carbon-monoxide (630080) at bagging operations were not toxic under the conditions observed during the survey dates of March 29, April 2, and May 25, 1976. Workers reported skin, eye and nose, and upper respiratory irritation. The irritant effects were of short duration and usually resolved after washing affected skin with soap and water and clearing the nose. Medical examination revealed slight irritation of the nasal mucosa in only one worker. Based on observations of work practices and conditions, it appears that worker exposures could be reduced by improved work practices, improved equipment design and maintenance, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
