Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH at the Herald-Times, Inc., a newspaper (SIC-2711) with a daily circulation of about 26,000 papers, in Bloomington, Indiana, on September 22-23, 1976. An authorized employee representative requested the investigation to evaluate the potential hazard associated with the photo polymer system. About one year earlier several employees working near a basement sump complained of headache. The determinations were based on the results of environmental sampling, interview of nine affected employees, evaluation of work practices, and inspection of plant premises. The results show that air contamination does not pose a chronic health hazard
however, there is an eye hazard because of potential contact with the process chemicals, primarily sodium-hydroxide (1310732) and phenol (108952). Exposures to oil mist and Stoddard solvent (8052413) in the press room do not constitute a health hazard. With the prevailing personal protection program and limited exposures, the noise levels in the press room do not present a hearing loss hazard, and neither does the sump box in the basement. The fork lift emitted hazardous concentrations of carbon-monoxide (630080). Three of the nine affected workers felt that the oil or ink mist made breathing unpleasant or bothered their breathing, and one of the three felt that the etching solution might cause minor skin irritation. Several recommendations for improving conditions are made. [Description provided by NIOSH]
