Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH at the Redfield Company, a producer of rifle scopes (SIC-3484), in Denver, Colorado, on July 29-30 and November 9-12, 1976. An authorized employee representative requested the investigation for worker exposure to acetone (67641), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), 1,1,1-trichlorethane (71556) and oil mist, because workers have experienced episodes of headache, stomach disorders, dermatitis, difficult breathing, muscle cramps, and nervous conditions with occupational exposure. During the initial survey, concentrations of methyl-ethyl-ketone, oil mist and with one exception, 1,1,1- trichloroethane in the breathing zone were below the most recent evaluation criteria
2-hour breathing zone samples of some scope assemblers were about 50 percent of the criteria for acetone. Confidential interviews of 43 affected workers revealed symptoms consistent with overexposure to acetone. At the time of the follow- up environmental and medical evaluation conducted on November 9-12, 1976 all concentrations in the eight hour breathing zone samples were below the most recent evaluation criteria and all biological tests were within the acceptable range. The data obtained in November, 1976 indicated that a toxic situation did not exist. [Description provided by NIOSH]
