Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation determination was conducted by NIOSH on February 18-20, 1976 at the Becton-Dickinson Thermometer factory (SIC-3829) in Juncos, Puerto Rico. The investigation was prompted by a request from the Puerto Rico Secretary of Health to evaluate reputed mercurialism in workers at the Becton-Dickinson Thermometer Factory in Juncos, Puerto Rico
a similar request was received from an authorized representative of employees. Environmental sampling and medical evaluation (including the administration of a questionnaire, physical examinations, urine tests and blood tests) of a randomly selected sample of 51 of a total of 242 affected employees, revealed that production workers at the facility surveyed are exposed to potentially toxic concentrations of mercury (7439976) vapor. The vapor concentrations in the air ranged from less than workers had signs and symptoms consistent with those seen in clinical mercurialism
however, blood and urine mercury measurements failed to confirm this diagnosis. Recommendations are made for a reappraisal of the company's surveillance procedures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
