  A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on August 7 and November 3-6, 1975, at the Evans Products Company, Missoula, Montana, a facility engaged in the manufacturing of plywood (SIC-2436). The survey was prompted by a request from management to evaluate potential exposure to the 28 affected workers to plywood veneer dryer emissions. Abietic-acid (514103) pimaric- acid (127275), alpha-pinene (80568) and beta-pinene (127913) were identified in the vicinity of the veneer dryer operation. Five of 27 workers reported acute eye and respiratory symptoms, and 4 had abnormal respiratory function tests. There was no evidence suggesting that veneer dryer emissions cause allergic respiratory disease or hay fever. Recommendations are made for keeping employee exposure to plywood veneer dryer emissions to a minimum. [Description provided by NIOSH]
