Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on July 28-31, and December 1-5, 1975, at the Fairbanks Weighing Division, Colt Industries, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, a facility engaged in the manufacturing of weighing scales (SIC-3536). The survey was prompted by a request from the employer regarding the presence of potentially toxic concentrations of any of the substances found in the place of employment. Based on environmental sampling, ventilation measurements, observation of work practices and medical questionnaires administered to the 27 affected employees it was established that with one exception, all welders in the production welding area were exposed to toxic concentrations of welding fumes and gases. No health hazards were identified in the plating room, heat treatment operation and grinding, sanding and abrasive cutoff area. Recommendations are made for improving the exhaust system to effectively remove welding fumes and gases. [Description provided by NIOSH]
