Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on January 9 and February 12, 1976, at Litho Art, Inc., in New York City, a facility engaged in lithographic operations (SIC-2795). The survey was prompted by a request from an authorized representative of the 7 affected employees alleging that the lithographic strippers were in contact with unknown toxic substances that produce skin rashes on the hands. Evaluation of routine operating conditions, including the limited use of chemicals, revealed that the workers were not exposed to hazardous concentrations of airborne contaminants. The results of the medical investigation revealed some abnormalities of the skin of the hands, although it did not appear that these conditions represented occupational contact dermatitis. Recommendations for better hand care are made.
