Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation Determination was performed by NIOSH on August 22 and 24, 1977, at the Mesa Veterinary Hospital (SIC-0742), in Golden, Colorado. The survey was prompted by a request from the management which recognized the potential hazard associated with chronic exposure to anesthetic gases, although there were no specific alleged health problems at the time the request was generated. Environmental sampling indicated that the mean 8 hour time weighed average exposure to nitrous-oxide (10024972) was 34ppm for the veterinarian and 44ppm for the anesthesia technicians. Average exposure to halogenated anesthetics, halothane (151677) and methoxyflurane (76380), for the same two groups was 0.8 and 2.2ppm. These concentrations were slightly above the NIOSH recommended limit of 24ppm nitrous-oxide and 0.5ppm halogenated anesthetic. Recommendations are made to further reduce the concentration of anesthetic gases in the air. [Description provided by NIOSH]
