Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation determination was performed by NIOSH on September 20-22, 1977, in the operating suite of the Hospital for Special Surgery (SIC-8069), New York City, New York. The survey was prompted by a request from the management expressing concern that, despite the presence of a scavenging system, a quantitative analysis of operating room exposures to anesthetic gases was not available. On the basis of environmental sampling, it was concluded that exposures to nitrous-oxide (10024972), halothane (151677) and enflurane, presented a hazard to the operating room personnel. On the contrary, exposures to methyl-methacrylate (80626) did not present a hazard to the employees. Recommendations are made for the control of waste anesthetic gases and vapors in operating rooms.
