Description:A Health Hazard Evaluation was conducted by NIOSH on July 11-14, 1977, at the McDonnell Aircraft Company (SIC-3728) in St. Louis, Missouri. The survey was prompted by a request from an authorized representative of the approximately 77 affected workers, to determine whether any substance normally found in the place of employment has potentially toxic effects in such concentrations as used or found. Medical evaluation of employees and environmental sampling revealed that employees were not exposed to toxic concentrations of iron-oxide (1317619), nickel (7440020), chromium (7782505), sulfuric-acid (7664939), sodium-hydroxide (1310732), hydrochloric-acid (7647010), hydrofluoric-acid (7664393), nitric- acid (7697372), hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), nitric-oxide (10102439), toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), benzene (71432), refined petroleum solvents, tetrachloroethylene (127184), acetone (67641) and styrene (100425). Workers in the masking operations may occasionally be exposed to organic solvents, while workers in the etching operations may be exposed to acids and nitrogen oxides which may have produced medical symptoms. No definite conclusion could be reached in regard to the occupational nature of the high mortality rate recorded in one department. Recommendations for improving existing conditions are made.
