Description:As indicated by employees of General Electric (SIC-3612) at Philadelphia who developed some form of cancer an evaluation of the clean tip vacuum parts section of electric transmission and control systems manufacture has been conducted. Cleaning is performed by placing parts in alternating room temperature baths of water, chromic-acid (7738945), hydrochloric-acid (7647010), nitric-acid (7697372), sulfuric-acid (7664939) and acetic-acid (64197). Greatest exposure risk occurs when baskets of parts are transferred from tank to tank. Medical releases for two present and two former employees were obtained. Environmental samples were obtained. However, a general renovation of the chemical cleaning has since been made. Medical data from four cases in question showed two cases of cancer unrelated histologically and by location, one case had no cancer, and in one case no information could be obtained. No conclusions could be drawn relating two cases of cancer to occupational exposure. Past sampling indicated levels capable of mucous membrane irritation, however, these could not be considered excessive. Recommendations are made to refine sampling techniques and provide additional controls during materials transfer.
