Description:An evaluation of processes at Teledyne Wah Chang for the chemical extraction (SIC-1099) of zirconium (7440677) and hafnium (7440586) for zirconium bearing sand was conducted to determine if the chemicals present in sand chlorination, separations and magnesium (7439954) recovery are toxic as found and used. The sampling was conducted over two shifts in the three operations areas and was designed to include all job descriptions. In the sand chlorination area, certain employees are exposed to phosgene (75445), chlorine (7782505) and hydrochloric-acid (7647010) which are considered toxic. The combined exposure is 3.78 times evaluation criteria. There were significant differences between the sand chlorination group vs. the control (office lab) group relative to job related symptoms reflecting chemical irritation of the mucous membranes (coughing, watering eyes, rash). In the separations area, exposure to hydrochloric-acid, ammonia and zirconium-oxide were toxic as found in excess of evaluation criteria. Spirometric data showed significant differences between separation workers and controls. Significant differences were also evident for symptoms indicative of chemical irritation of mucous membranes. Exposure to sulfur-oxide (7446095) in the magnesium recovery area was toxic, with concentrations in excess of evaluation criteria. Recovery workers exposure to magnesium fumes was not toxic as found. It is suspected that this work population may have increased coronary morbidity but not necessarily coronary mortality.
