• Description:
  A health hazard evaluation of the Palatine Nursing Home (SIC-8069), Palatine, New York, was conducted to determine if the nursing staff had contracted scabies from a patient at the facility which provides constant care for the acute and chronically ill. Scabies, caused by the human mite, is characterized by intraepithelial galleries made beneath the skin by the female for depositing eggs and feces. A benzyl-benzoate preparation is recommended for treating the condition. Medical surveys of employees were conducted. Physical examinations consisted of visual examination of the back, buttocks, chest, abdomen, ankles, dorsal aspects of the interdigital webs and axillary folds. In addition, medical reports from employees' private physicians were obtained. It was concluded that the nursing staff contracted scabies from a patient. Recommendations included complete physical exams for new staff and patients
