Description:

A health hazard evaluation of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Geysers Power Plant (SIC-4931), Healdsburg, California was conducted to determine whether alleged illnesses were related to hydrogen- sulfide (7783064) exposure. Work practices of employees were surveyed and data from numerous company reports of the hydrogen sulfide monitoring program and company medical records were reviewed. Direct reading instruments were used to measure hydrogen- sulfide levels around cooling towers. It was found that employees in the hydrogen sulfide abatement system can develop dermatitis and pharyngitis unless proper work practices including wearing full rain gear, goggles, respirators and barrier creams are followed. The agent responsible for these irritations in the abatement system has not been identified. It was concluded that hydrogen-sulfide exposure does not seem to present an occupational health problem to workers. Recommendations included continual occupational health surveillance, provision of change houses, showers and washing machines so workers may conveniently decontaminate skin and clothing as required; and worker education and training on proper work practices.
