  Environmental air was sampled, work practices were observed, and the workplace and materials used at the Herman Diamond Company in New York City were reviewed on May 1 and 2, 1979. The evaluation was prompted by a request from an authorized representative of the employer of the company to evaluate the employee exposure to asbestos (1332214) during diamond cutting operations. Sampling findings show that asbestos fibers either were undetected or were at a minimal level, which was less than the OSHA standard (2 fibers per cubic centimeter, greater than 5 microns in length). It is recommended that a less hazardous substance be substituted for asbestos. If this is not feasible, the asbestos paper should be cut wet to keep fibers from becoming airborne.
