Description:

Ventilation measurements, screening for organic solvents, and personal interviews were performed in the photopolymer plate processing area of the Container Graphics Corporation, (SIC-3861) Toledo, Ohio, on April 5, 1979 at the request of the State of Ohio, Division of Occupational Health. Airborne levels of iodine (7553562), measured by a new technique, were detected in worker breathing zones in concentrations up to 0.15 parts per million parts of air (ppm), exceeding OSHA limits of 0.1ppm for an 8 hour Time Weighted Average exposure. Symptoms of nose congestion and throat irritation among workers were found to be consistent with iodine toxicology and solvent vapor exposure. Recommendations resulting from the evaluation include providing and improving local exhaust systems throughout the factory, redesigning and expanding the polymer plate processing room to accommodate production needs, using solvent resistant gloves, properly disposing of solvent rags, and using NIOSH approved respirators.
