Description:An evaluation of chemical hazards was conducted on January 5, 1979 at the paint spraying operations of the Decorative Trim Department of the Inland Division of General Motors (SIC-3714) in Dayton, Ohio. The request for this evaluation was made by an employee representative in response to complaints from among 13 workers of nausea, and eye and throat irritations. Environmental sampling tests were performed to determine toluene (108883), tetrachloroethylene (127184), isobutyl-isobutyrate (97858), and benzyl-chloride (100447) levels. Ventilation measurements also were made, work practices were observed, and medical interviews were held. Air sample analysis results show that all chemical levels were below OSHA limits. The OSHA limit for toluene is 200 parts per million parts of air (ppm); and the limits for tetrachloroethylene and benzyl- chloride are 100 ppm and 1 ppm, respectively. No guidelines have been set for isobutyl-isobutyrate. Ventilation was considered to be adequate. Complaint symptoms which prompted the evaluation were not observed during the survey. Work practice improvements involving paint stand design are suggested. The use of respirators, and training of the workers in the proper use and handling of paints and solvents also are recommended.
