Description:Samples of wrapping paper were tested, and workers were given a dermatological questionnaire and examination to identify toxic exposures at the Diamond Fruit Growers, Inc. the Duckwall-Pooley Fruit Co., and Stadelman Fruit, Inc. (SIC-0723), in Hood River, Oregon on October 11 to 16, 1978. A request for the evaluations came from an employee representative of the 369 sorters and packers from the three companies. Ethoxyquin (91532) was found in one sample of paper, and possibly was present in others. A history of skin rash was reported by 18 percent of the sorters and packers, and 10 percent of the workers had an observable rash. The authors conclude that a potential hazard for skin irritation and sensitization existed, although the exact chemicals responsible could not be determined. Good personal hygiene and work habits are recommended to aid in rash prevention. Revision of the facilities and operations also are recommended to minimize exposure to chemicals used in the packaging. [Description provided by NIOSH]
